How to convert an image format
- Select a JPEG, PNG or WebP file.
- Choose the new image format and, for JPEG or WebP, set the quality.
- Select Convert image and compare the output preview and size.
- Download the converted file. The original remains unchanged.
JPEG vs PNG vs WebP
JPEG is widely supported and efficient for photographs, but its compression is lossy and it cannot retain transparency. PNG preserves pixels and transparent backgrounds, making it useful for screenshots, diagrams and interface assets, though photographic PNG files can be large.
WebP supports both lossy and transparent images and often produces smaller web assets. It is supported by current mainstream browsers, but a publishing system, older application or print workflow may still require JPEG or PNG.
Conversion does not add missing detail
Converting a compressed JPEG to PNG prevents another lossy export, but it cannot restore detail removed from the JPEG. Repeatedly opening and saving a JPEG can introduce more artefacts. Keep the highest-quality original and generate destination-specific copies from it.
Local and private processing
The selected file is decoded and re-encoded inside your browser. No image upload is required, which is useful for confidential drafts, client assets and family photographs. Conversion speed depends on the image size and device memory.
Colour profiles, animation, camera metadata and some specialist image features may not survive browser Canvas conversion. Use professional imaging software when exact archival or print colour behaviour is required.
