How to use the word and character counter

Type or paste content into the editor and the dashboard updates immediately. Spaces are included in the main character count, while the second measure removes all whitespace. Use the copy or download buttons when you finish editing.

Word counts can differ between applications

This tool counts sequences of letters or numbers and keeps connected apostrophes and hyphens inside a word. Microsoft Word, Google Docs, content management systems and social platforms may handle symbols, URLs and East Asian scripts differently. When a formal limit applies, the destination system has the final count.

Reading and speaking time estimates

Reading time is based on approximately 225 words per minute, while speaking time uses 130 words per minute. Technical material, unfamiliar vocabulary, visual explanations and deliberate pauses make real delivery slower. Treat the figures as planning ranges rather than performance promises.

Use frequency as an editing signal

The common-word table removes a small set of ordinary English function words. It can expose accidental repetition or confirm that a page stays focused on its subject. It is not a search-ranking score, and forcing a keyword repeatedly usually reduces clarity.

Google and readers value complete, useful content more than a mechanical word count. Edit for intent, evidence and comprehension first; use length and frequency to diagnose the draft, not to pad it.

Questions answered

Frequently asked questions

How does the word counter handle hyphenated words?

The counter treats a connected hyphenated expression such as “evidence-based” as one word. Results can differ from a publishing platform that uses another counting rule.

Are spaces included in the character count?

The dashboard shows both totals: all Unicode characters including spaces, and characters with whitespace removed.

How is reading time calculated?

Estimated reading time uses 225 words per minute and speaking time uses 130 words per minute. Both are rounded up and are only practical estimates.

Is my text uploaded or stored?

No. Counting and frequency analysis happen locally in your browser. The page does not send or save the text.
